Epocal Wins the 2006 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation
Press Release
Palo Alto, California
February 12, 2007
Frost & Sullivan honored companies for industry leadership at the annual Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards Banquet held in Anaheim, California last week.
These Awards recognized companies and individuals that are predicted to encourage significant growth in their industries, have identified emerging trends before they became the standard in the marketplace, and have created advanced technologies that will catalyze industries in the near future.
Award Description
The Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation is presented to the company that has demonstrated technological superiority within its industry. This Award recognizes the ability of the company to successfully develop and introduce new technology, formulate a well-designed product family, and make significant product performance contributions to the industry.
Frost & Sullivan is proud to distinguish Epocal Inc. with the 2006 Award for Technology Innovation in the U.S. POCT Markets. Adapting the production technologies used for commercial smart cards, Epocal has succeeded in miniaturizing diagnostics entirely into a single device at low costs. This disruptive technology has profound implications on the entire POCT market where quantitative lab-accurate tests typically command price premiums. Epocal has radically changed that association with its technological breakthrough.
Cost-effective and Affordable for Widespread Adoption
Epocal ingeniously used existing high volume production technologies for smart cards to engineer the first low cost laboratory-on-a-chip complete with circuit modules carrying reagents, fluidics and biosensors. Housed entirely in a format similar in size to a credit card, this FlexCardTM diagnostic card is a realization of Epocal’s proprietary Biosensors-on-FlexTM technology and Fluidics-on-FlexTM technology. In a single continuous manufacturing process, biosensors and components for complex fluidic manipulations are incorporated into the FlexCard diagnostic card. This simple and efficient procedure eliminates the more complex assemblies involved with other point-of-care devices in the market. Within minutes, raw materials are converted into a quantitative lab-accurate diagnostic test card at a price that is several times less expensive than other comparable products and as astonishingly affordable as paper test strips.
